Supernature / Goldfrapp
“I liked Felt Mountain, I really did. I never thought they’d become background music for Loreal commercials.”

This is an exercise / Anna Oxygen
“Anna Oxygen is from Olympia, wears aerobics gear, sings like a robot, does video art, and likes dark electro… I understand all these bands trying to copy Interpol, but ripping off a lesbian new-wave performance artist? Where is the logic in that?”

Dead drunk / Terrestrial Tones
“… here’s the latest report: you suck. But mysteriously, your “music” both sucks AND blows. It’s like a fucking double action vacuum cleaner or something.”

Highest hopes / Nightwish
“What is this? The exact opposite to a cry for help?”

Film school / Film School
“It’s too… you know, film school-ish. Hey I just invented a new word! Send more cash.”

Meme / Milosh
“Who the fuck is that guy? …You see, this is actually quite good. But that “Hey ya’ll, check my Pour Homme face” cover is so crappy it makes me want to go blind.”

Nineteenninetynine / 1999
“Johan sings with the desperation and urgency of an orphan trapped in the basement of a Belgian. …it’s so intense I wish I could snort it.”

Ballad of the broken seas / Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
“…her singing is the equivalent of when I had to share my bedroom with my sick grandmother and she would make those dry-mouth swallowing sounds in her sleep all night. It’s literally the sound of saliva.”

Comfort of stranger / Beth Orton
“Here’s another girl with a guitar, doing the same old “I’m just a girl with a guitar” thing. C’mon, get exciting. You’re a girl, you can play the guitar, and we’ve established that. Tell me something new for a change. Do the Chaka Chaka.”
